Helpful Dressmaking Tips & Tricks for Beginners

Nowadays, there are many aspiring professionals who want to get noticed for their creations in the dressmaking niche. One of the things that you must do to have the chance to become a designer’s dressmaker is to keep up with fashion trends. We know this is not an easy task, as fashion trends change quite often. However, you are not required to copy the latest trends in your work, but you are rather recommended to use your own interpretation of something that is in today’s trend in your creations.

To keep up with fashion trends, you can watch some current TV about fashion, read some magazines, and even spend some time online to find out the news about fashion and trends. No matter what you do, just make sure you often take the pulse of the fashion world.

Another good advice is to specialize. You are recommended to pick a specific target audience. For example, try to choose women of a certain age, body type, social group or interest. It is easier this way than to generalize your creations. However, you can still get orders from clients outside your specialty. No matter your clients, make sure you always cater to their requirements and needs and create a beautiful garment that is both wearable and comfortable.

To make yourself a name and a good reputation, you need to always maintain top-quality garments. You should only use a good and well-maintained sewing machine. Even if many people think that there is no difference between the various tools that you use for sewing, the truth is that it actually is a difference. For example, even pins are important, as top-quality pins are better than pins you get from the dollar store. If you want to be considered serious in your work, then you should always try to use the best equipment that you can. Besides investing in the best equipment, it is also essential to maintain it, by regular service and maintenance.

One of the best investments that you can do and that is truly useful in your job is a dress form. It helps you with draping and fitting, and it is one of the best assistants that you can get for your dressmaking job.

Another important aspect of your work is the needle size. Although casual users don’t usually concern about this, the needle you use in your sewing machine has a great impact on the finished garments. For example, you are recommended to use thicker needles for leather or denim, and thin needles for silks. You should always have a wide selection of needles on-hand, to make your sewing easier. Needles are not only important for the sewing machine but also for the hand-work.

Scissors are also an important part of your work, so you need to make sure you keep them sharp. You can buy tools to sharpen them yourself, or maybe you prefer taking them to the shop for sharpening, on a regular schedule. Don’t wait until your scissors feel dull.

Find a space that you can use solely for dressmaking. It becomes tiring to take all of your equipment out of the closet every time you want to work. If it is possible, you should get a corner or room for your studio.

As you can see, it is only required to take care of some aspects, and you can become a successful dressmaker.
